Mai walked down the path from the postern into town. As she looked at the familar town she loved she looked at all the people practicing and training as well. Fighting had becomeher life now.
Mai didn't understand why people were so prejudice. About everything, race, gender, religion. She was being judged, saying she was weaker then everyone cause she was a girl, but Mai had beaten her brother more then once in a fight.
She walked down the streets with her sword on her belt, hanging low almost scraping the ground, as Mai was young herself. She walked down and watched as the people trained and wished she had something more to train with as well. She wished someone would make her stronger, as theyhad one for Toru. She knew over time if she did not have a teacher like he did, he would prove her wrong and become stronger then her. She could not let that happen, for her father would be a little to pleased to hear hisson say it with sincerity.

Riku sat quietly on the roof of someone's house, overlooking the town. A lot of people were doing a lot of different things, from shopping to fighting. It was kind of amusing to watch. One thing caught his eye a little more than the rest. As his eyes were travelling over the people, he caught glimpse of a little girl. And sure enough, attatched to her belt was a sword that looked nearly as big as her.
Fighting at a young age...it's kind of sad.
Riku quickly rethought when he remembered how old he and Sora were when they started fighting with swords and that the fact that he was only 16. It was old, but not THAT old.
He leaped off the roof and went to watch the people sparring, but kept his eye on the little girl. He was curious to see what she would do.

Mai walked forward and held tighter on her hilt as she watched the sparring continue on. She frowned a little when she saw only about one other girl in the group. She had long thing pigtails on her head right now, that stayed to her face a little. She felt the small cape she wore, much like Cloud's old one, wave a little in the slight breeze she made from walking.
She felt the knee socks rolling slowly to her feet as she walked, and looked back towards where the postern was off in the distance. Man, she had spent a while there.

As Riku watched the girl, someone confronted him. Riku wasn't expected it, so he turned his head quickly towards the person. He was a large build and held some sort of war hammer on his back.
" 'ey you! Think ya so tough with yer long hair? I could crush you!"
Riku was confused by this. No one ever confronted him like that, and certainly not that loudly. It seemed like a stupid concept, for someone to yell at him over his hair. Maybe he was one of those manly man types.
"Shove it." Was Riku's response.
The man started yelling about something, but Riku wasn't interested. Nothing caught his ear and he was about to walk away until he heard the words "Challenge you...". Riku turned and looked at the man.
"Alright, fine."

Mai turned her head to hear the noises of a comotion and a small bit of whisper. She walked over to where she heard a guy yelling at another, figures... She thought as she saw the other boy. He looked familar...like she had heard of him before, or seen him somewhere. She looked over Riku and shoved it off her shoulder. But, she wouldn't let that keep her away from watching the challenge.
This guy obviously wasn't from around here. Most guys around here would take the challenge up in a second. Riku didn't. But, as guys were cowardly in the way of words, even if they acted tough, if someone challenged them they accepted. Mai did that alot, but just so no one would under estimate her.

Riku stepped into what looked like a ring, or sparring area. He came in after the big loud guy. He saw that a crowd started to accumulate. Exactly what he DIDN'T want. He figured it best to make the fight quick. The man drew his war hammer and yelled at Riku.
"I'll show you who's tough, little boy!"
He ran at Riku and lifted his hammer. The second before it came down on Riku's head, he lifted his arm and blocked it with the suddenly appeared keyblade. While in the lock, he reversed behind him and kicked the man's legs out from under him. While he was falling back onto Riku, Riku slashed upwards with the keyblade sending the man far up into the air. He was done.
Riku withdrew his keyblade and started out of the arena while the man was still in the air somewhere.
"What an idiot..." He mumbled to himself.

Mai watched at the stupidityof the other man. Who attacks like that? She said as she had dug threw the crowd to the front. Then she saw the keyblade. She knew she had to have heard of him now, she always wanted to be a keyblade master, and envied those who were.
After a moment as Riku stepped off the arena she ran towards him. She didn't even look at him or say hey. She touched the blade of his keyblade, not taking it from him though. "Man, lucky." She said to herself. But, she guessed this guy was worth the keyblade. She looked over it, not caring what Riku really thought of this.
Mai wished she could have it and prove to her father she was strong, even as a little kid she longed for big dreams.

Riku looked, a little bit stunned at the little girl who came up and touched his keyblade. It was the same one he had been eyeing before. She was short compared to him, but that was to be expected. Obviously she had heard of keyblades before...and obviously she liked it.
"Keep your heart strong and maybe someday you'll get one too." As he said it, his keyblade dissapeared. Normally he would've snapped at anyone who touched his weapon, but he felt different this time. He bent down so he was a little bit below he eye level.
"Riku. What's your name?"

Mai backed up a step. "Mai, I knew I thought I'd heard of you somewhere. I have been wanting a keyblade since forever!" She said with new found enthusiasm. She looked at Riku with a smile, her hair covering part of her eye, and her long cape blowing in the wind a little. "I really really really want one! I want to be just as strong as you and stronger then everyone here!I want to be stronger then all the guys!" She said to him, more excited then she'd been in a while.

Riku was a little surprised by Mai's response. He was confused for about half a second, and then once again remembered him and Sora when they were younger. How much he yearned to travel and be powerful. He knew the feeling. And her being a girl in what looked like a man dominated town must have made it harder.
"You'll get there. You just gotta keep at it."
Hah...look at me. I'm talking like Sora now...
Riku smiled at the girl's enthusiasum. Somehow, he could see her wielding a keyblade. Not now, but with a little training, he could see it. Riku eyed her sword.
"That's quite the sword you have there...must take a lot to wield it."

"This old thing? It's all I've got." She said to Riku as she pulled it out and set it in front of her. "My father won't get me anything better, it's his old sword, the one he had in his twenties." She said as she looked at Riku, now longing for a new one.
"But, that's different, I mean at least I could bet my brother with it." She said as she put it back away. "But, he's younger so it's no big deal." She said as she smiled to Riku's silvery hair. "I wonder if I want to go home, I've been out in the postern for the past couple days, have no thought of wanting to go home. It's wether I need to or not that worries me." She said as she looked into Riku's eyes for a moment.

Riku didn't hesitate to answer honestly. "You know...you never know how luckey you are to have a home until you don't have it anymore..."
Riku laughed a little, because he knew that it was funner to explore than be stuck in a house all day. He had to be fair about it. "I'd say, go check in at least. Then, if you want to, you can come back here. I'll still be here if you come back."
He stood up as he said it and thought about his own home. He could go back there...but he wasn't ready yet. Not to mention, he didn't plan on going back with Sora and Kairi.

"But..." Mai knew he wouldn't give her another chance. "Come on. I think I'll need protection." She said grabbing his hand and pulling him towards her house, so he could stand outside and wait for her. "I'll be back in a moment." She said after a they had walked an awfully short three blocks to Mai. She let go of Riku and said, "Wait here."
Mai sighed and walked into the house. "Dad," She said softly. Allof a sudden something appeared behind her. She turned around to see Toru. "Toru." She said softly.
"Mai, I think it best you leave, dad's furious with you." He said in a quiet voice.
"But, just cause I was gone for two weeks?" She had told Riku a shorter time. When she finished her sentence she felt a tall shadow looming over her. she slowly turned around to her father. "Dad." She said without even a smile.
Her father looked furious with her, running away, and he knew it was cause she thought she was stronger then everyone, he just couldn't accept it.

Riku waited patiently outside. He was starting to like this girl. She had an initiative and wouldn't take no for an answer. As he waited outside, it was a little bit quiet. He was expecting one of her parents to yell at her...but there wasn't really much.
Maybe she hasn't confronted them yet...
Riku leaned against the wall and twidled his thumbs slowly. Protection. It's true that Hollow Bastion was dangerous, but he hardly doubted that she couldn't handle herself. She probably wanted something more. He decided on waiting for her.

"Mai..." Her father said quietly.
"Sorry dad, really, I just needed to get away." She said to him. "Sorry."
"That's no reason to be gone for two weeks!" He yelled at her now, letting go of all his anger. "Don't ever do that again!" He yelled grabbing her shoulders with a tight grip, it hurt Mai.
"ow.." She said to him.
"This is just a fragment of the pain you have caused me since the day you were born!"
"Yeah! Well! Maybe I should leave! I don't need any of you! I never did, and I never will!" She screamed amost to him. Mai looked at Toru who looked upset and scared. Mai's father began to reach for him again, when she pulled out her sword. "Don't touch me!" She yelled as she slipped the sword and ran towards the door.
Mai didn't turn back, she ran past Riku and down the opposite way to the market street. She ran back towards the path to the postern, just next to the town. She began to cry a little as her sword wasn't fastened and fell to the ground. She ignored it and continued to run, until she came to a wall. She stopped facing it, completly still.
